🧾 Step-by-Step: What to Do If You Lose Money to Online Fraud (as per RBI guidelines)

Step 1: Immediately Report the Fraud

Time is critical. The RBI mandates that customer liability depends on how quickly the fraud is reported.

Where to report:

    • Call your bank’s 24×7 customer care or fraud helpline.

    • Send an email to the official customer support ID.

    • Use internet/mobile banking “Report Fraud” option, if available.

    • Visit the nearest bank branch and file a written complaint.

    • Report to the National Cyber Crime Portal: www.cybercrime.gov.in

    • Dial 1930, the official Cybercrime Helpline in India.

⏱️ Step 2: Report Within 3 Days to Ensure Zero Liability

According to RBI’s circular on ‘Limited Liability of Customers’ (July 6, 2017): Click here to read full circular

  • If you report within 3 working days of the unauthorized transaction:

    • You will have zero liability—the bank must refund your money in full within 10 working days.

📅 Step 3: If Delay in Reporting (After 3 Days)

  • Reported within 4–7 working days:

    • Customer liability is capped to ₹5,000 for Basic Savings Bank accounts and ₹10,000–25,000 for others, depending on account type.

  • Reported after 7 working days:

    • Liability will be determined by the bank’s internal policy, as approved by RBI.

🕵️ Step 4: File a Police Complaint or FIR

  • File an FIR or a cyber complaint at your local Cyber Crime Police Station.

  • Provide:

    • Screenshots of transactions

    • SMS/email alerts

    • Bank statement

    • Communication logs with the fraudster

Note: Though not mandatory for refunds, police reports help in investigation and recovery.

📑 Step 5: Get a Complaint Reference Number

  • Always get a written acknowledgement or complaint number from the bank.

  • This helps in follow-ups and escalation if needed.

🛑 Step 6: Block/Freeze Your Account or Card (if needed)

  • Ask the bank to:

    • Block your debit/credit card

    • Freeze net banking or mobile banking

    • Issue a new card or reset login credentials

🧾 Step 7: Submit a Dispute Form (If Requested)

Some banks may ask you to:

  • Fill a Dispute Transaction Form

  • Attach copies of:

    • Transaction details

    • Identity proof

    • Fraud evidence

📞 Step 8: Escalate If Bank Does Not Respond in 30 Days

If the bank does not resolve the complaint or refund the money within 30 days, you can escalate to:

➤ RBI’s Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (2021)
