A student from IIT Bombay fell victim to a scam, losing Rs 7.28 lakh to fraudsters impersonating officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The deception began with a phone call in July, during which the scammer alleged that the student’s mobile number was linked to 17 complaints regarding illegal activities.
The caller instilled fear by threatening the student with a “digital arrest” if he did not comply with their demands. In a panic, the student made several transactions, ultimately transferring a substantial amount to the criminals. This incident highlights a troubling rise in cyber fraud across India, where scammers increasingly leverage digital channels to target unsuspecting individuals.
The victims of such schemes often include educated professionals and senior citizens, underscoring the widespread nature of this issue. To combat these scams, it is crucial to remain vigilant, verify the identities of callers, and refrain from disclosing personal information over the phone.
