The Bombay High Court has ordered the Maharashtra government to pay Rs 2 lakh in compensation to police officer Sambhaji Patil, who experienced an “illegal arrest” and was detained for 20 hours by a senior officer.

This decision came from a bench comprising Justices AS Chandurkar and RS Patil, who were reviewing a petition submitted by Patil, a police inspector from Satara. The court also indicated that the government has the option to seek reimbursement of the compensation from the officers deemed responsible for this incident.

Sambhaji Patil represented himself during the proceedings, detailing his involvement in the investigation of the murder of wrestler Sanjay Patil, a celebrated figure who had earned the esteemed Maharashtra Kesari title.

Sanjay was tragically shot in a market in Karad, Satara district, on January 15, 2009, by two assailants. Allegations arose that Udaysinh Patil, the son of former Maharashtra Law Minister Vilasrao Patil, orchestrated the murder by hiring contract killers, motivated by Sanjay’s successful challenge against Udaysinh’s father in a market committee election.

As the investigation officer, Sambhaji had submitted a chargesheet in April 2009 and was preparing to file another when he was abruptly transferred from the Karad City Police Station to the Satara Crime Branch for administrative reasons.

This shift led to the case being handed over to two other officers, and a year later, Sambhaji found himself being questioned by an Additional Superintendent of Police regarding the investigation.
