Understanding the Caller Name ID Initiative in India

caller id

As the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India advocates for caller name identification, the question remains: can telecom operators overcome technical hurdles and reluctance to share data, or will subscribers continue to rely on third-party apps?

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has put forth a recommendation urging the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to enforce the implementation of a caller name identification feature across the telecom network.

However, telecom operators have communicated to the DoT that they are only able to reveal a caller’s identity to users within their own network, which implies that subscribers will still depend on applications like Truecaller to identify unknown callers.

The Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) feature is hindered by technical limitations and a hesitance from telecom companies to share their customer databases. Additionally, it is important to note that this feature will not be compatible with 2G mobile devices. The government is expected to roll out the CNAP feature in stages, beginning with calls made within the same network.
