Cybercrime is on the rise in Tamil Nadu, with Chennai and Coimbatore facing staggering financial losses. Stay alert and protect your hard-earned money from the clutches of online fraudsters!
The Tamil Nadu Police have issued a cautionary alert to the public regarding the alarming rise in cybercrimes, especially those involving financial scams.

From January to August 2024, Chennai alone recorded a staggering 1,679 cases of cybercrime, resulting in financial losses estimated at around Rs 189 crore. Coimbatore is not far behind, experiencing a notable surge in cybercriminal activities, with losses amounting to Rs 93 crore this year.
The state’s cybercrime unit has been inundated with 6,798 complaints in 2024, which have led to the filing of 255 FIRs and the arrest of 41 individuals. Among the prevalent scams are fraudulent online share trading schemes, “Digital Arrest” scams, deceptive part-time job offers, matrimonial frauds, and scams related to gifts or electricity bills.
The police strongly encourage victims to report any cybercrime incidents on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) within 24 hours, as this is crucial for initiating the freezing of any suspicious bank accounts.
Furthermore, a recent ruling from the Madras High Court has streamlined the recovery process for victims of cybercrime, allowing them to begin reclaiming their losses based on an NCRP complaint and a report from the cybercrime police, without the necessity of filing an FIR.
