The cyber-investigation division of the state police is poised to enhance its capabilities with the acquisition of a sophisticated blockchain-analysis tool designed to monitor cryptocurrency transactions and identify illicit activities.
This tool, valued at Rs 45 lakh and developed by an Israeli company, is expected to be operational at the Cyberdome Lab in Kochi by mid-December, according to informed sources.
As India continues to lead in global cryptocurrency adoption, Kerala has witnessed a notable increase in the use of digital currencies. While the majority of users engage in legitimate transactions, there are rising concerns regarding the potential misuse of virtual assets for illegal activities, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and terrorism.
Previously, the state police lacked specialized tools and relied on open-source resources for analyzing suspicious transactions, which limited their ability to conduct thorough investigations. The existing methods allowed for only a linear analysis of transactions, making the process labor-intensive and inefficient.
In contrast, the new chain-analysis tool will offer a comprehensive overview of transactions, enabling officers to more effectively identify and investigate suspicious activities.
Currently, cyber investigators analyze cryptocurrency transactions on an individual basis, tracking nodes, exchanges, and wallets through a cumbersome linear approach that demands significant manpower. The introduction of this advanced tool will streamline the investigative process, allowing for a more efficient examination of the flow of virtual assets globally.
For instance, if funds are traced to a country known for terrorist activities, such as Cambodia, which has recently become a hotspot for financial fraud, investigators will be able to flag these transactions promptly.
Additionally, the tool’s developers have indexed various crypto wallets and exchanges, facilitating access to critical information during investigations and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the cyber-investigation division.
