A tech professional from Bengaluru fell victim to an online gift card scam, losing a staggering Rs 4.5 lakh after receiving a deceptive WhatsApp message from an individual impersonating his superior.
The fraudulent communication urged him to acquire Apple App Store gift cards, which he promptly purchased and shared the codes for, only to discover later that he had been duped. In response to the incident, the victim lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the Cyber Crime branch in Bellandur, prompting the police to initiate an investigation into the matter.
Compounding his troubles, the victim encountered significant challenges in obtaining timely help from Apple’s customer support, which is only available during weekdays, leaving him in a frustrating predicament.
Is there a way to verify the authenticity of such requests?

There are numerous effective methods to authenticate requests, particularly those related to financial transactions or sensitive data.
One of the most reliable approaches is to directly confirm the request with the individual who allegedly sent it, utilizing a different communication method, such as calling their verified phone number rather than responding to the original message.
Additionally, it is crucial to be vigilant for warning signs that may indicate phishing attempts or scams; these can include urgent language, unusual requests, or unfamiliar email addresses and phone numbers. It is also advisable to cross-check contact information against official records; for instance, if the request originates from a business, you should verify the contact details on their official website.
Furthermore, always utilize secure and official channels for any transactions, steering clear of sharing sensitive information through unsecured or unofficial platforms.
In a corporate setting, it is wise to consult with your IT or security teams for verification and advice. Lastly, fostering awareness and providing regular training on identifying and managing phishing attempts and other scams can significantly enhance your ability to navigate these risks effectively.
