Beware the Cyberattack: Malware lurks in fake error messages targeting Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and OneDrive

A recent warning has been issued by security experts regarding a cyberattack that has been targeting popular platforms such as Google Chrome, Microsoft Word, and OneDrive. The attackers are using fake error messages to deceive users into unknowingly installing malware on their systems.

The cybercriminals behind this attack are employing a clever tactic where they send notifications claiming a software malfunction to users. They then prompt the users to install a ‘root certificate’ by instructing them to copy and paste raw code into PowerShell, a command-line tool used in Windows operating systems.

One of the malicious software, known as ‘cl.exe’, is specifically designed to replace cryptocurrency addresses in the clipboard. This deceptive tactic leads users to inadvertently transfer funds to the hacker’s wallet instead of the intended recipient, resulting in cryptocurrency theft.

In light of these cyber threats, users to exercise caution when prompted to execute raw code. They recommend that businesses focus on enhancing their detection and blocking mechanisms to safeguard against such attacks and protect sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
