By Adv Shoeb Hakim28 Dec 20243 min read

Overview
In a heartbreaking tale of deception, a 67-year-old Malaysian woman has lost over ₹4 crore (RM2.2 million) in a decade-long love scam.

The scammer, posing as an American businessman, managed to extract money from the victim through a series of elaborate lies and manipulations, all without ever meeting her in person.

 The Beginning of the Scam
The victim first connected with the scammer on Facebook in October 2017. The man introduced himself as an American businessman involved in medical equipment procurement in Singapore. After a month of communication, the two began an online relationship. The scammer claimed he wanted to move to Malaysia but couldn’t afford the transportation fees, prompting the victim to make her first bank transfer of RM5,000.

The Deception Unfolds
Over the years, the scammer continued to ask for money, citing various personal and business problems. The victim ended up transferring funds 306 times to 50 different bank accounts, resulting in total losses of RM2,210,692.60. The funds included loans taken from family members and friends. Despite never meeting the man in person or via video call, the victim was convinced by his excuses and continued to support him financially.

Realization and Legal Action
The woman only realized she had been scammed in November 2024 after sharing her experiences with a friend. The friend helped her understand the gravity of the situation, leading her to report the scam to the authorities. At a press conference, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf revealed that this may be the longest-running love scam involving a single victim.

Public Awareness and Caution
Comm Ramli urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in online relationships, particularly when money is requested. He advised against rushing into serious relationships and emphasized the importance of being skeptical when something seems too good to be true. He also warned against sharing personal details or making financial commitments to individuals met online.

Tips to Safeguard Against Love Scams

1. Be Skeptical of Online Relationships

2. Protect Personal Information

3. Recognize Red Flags

4. Educate Yourself and Others

5. Use Security Tools

6. Trust Your Instincts

By following these tips, you can protect yourself from falling victim to love scams and other online frauds. Stay vigilant and prioritize your safety in all online interactions.

Conclusion
This incident highlights the need for increased awareness and vigilance in online interactions. The emotional and financial toll of such scams can be devastating, and it is crucial for individuals to protect themselves by being cautious and skeptical of online relationships.
