The Karnataka High Court has rejected a petition aimed at quashing a First Information Report (FIR) against Sourish Bose and Deepanvita Ghosh, who stand accused of defrauding Amazon of more than ₹69 lakh.

The court characterized the case as a representation of contemporary criminal activity, highlighting the evolving nature of fraud in the digital age. The petitioners had sought to annul both the FIR and a prior ruling from a magistrate court, but their efforts were unsuccessful.

The fraudulent scheme was initially uncovered by an Amazon employee back in 2017. According to the allegations, Bose would purchase high-value items using his bank account, have them shipped to Ghosh’s residence, and then initiate a return within a day.

After receiving a refund, he would substitute the authentic products with lower-quality replicas, repack them, and send them back to Amazon. The return addresses used in this scheme were often linked to Ghosh’s home, but at times, they were directed to various other locations throughout Bengaluru.

Both individuals face charges under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code for cheating, as well as Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, which addresses online fraud.
