How Can Parents Protect Their Children’s Images Online?

By Adv Shoeb Hakim13 Sep 20241 min read

Meta collects publicly available data from users in Australia, which encompasses images and posts shared on platforms like Facebook and Instagram, to enhance the training of its artificial intelligence models. This practice has been ongoing since 2007, reflecting a long-standing approach to data utilisation.

A significant difference arises when comparing the data collection policies for Australian users to those in Europe; Australians are unable to opt out of this data-gathering process due to the distinct privacy regulations that govern these regions.

Additionally, while Meta can utilize public images of children that parents have shared, it is important to note that data from accounts belonging to users under the age of 18 is not subject to scraping, highlighting a measure of protection for younger individuals.

The absence of opt-out options for Australian users has sparked considerable concern regarding privacy, leading to increasing demands for enhanced privacy safeguards and a reevaluation of Australia’s Privacy Act to better protect individuals’ data rights.
