The Impact of WhatsApp Account Blockades on Cybercrime

WhatsApp and the word banned

In a decisive move against cyber fraud, India’s Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has launched a substantial initiative through its Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), working in tandem with the Department of Telecom.

This collaborative effort has led to the suspension of over 17,000 WhatsApp accounts that were traced back to South-East Asian nations, including Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar. The accounts came under scrutiny after numerous victims reported fraudulent activities via online channels, prompting a thorough investigation.

Findings indicated that a significant number of these scams were orchestrated from call centers located in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Laos, with many of them having ties to Chinese casinos operating in Cambodia. Notably, more than half of the accounts that were blocked had been active since January 2024, highlighting the ongoing nature of these cyber threats.
