What Led to the Delhi Court Summoning the ED Director?

In a notable incident, a Delhi court summoned a special director from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) following an inappropriate exchange between the agency’s counsel and the presiding judge during a money laundering case linked to Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, D K Shivakumar, among others.

The situation escalated when the counsel’s disrespectful remarks prompted the court to take action, emphasizing the importance of maintaining decorum within the judicial system.

In response to the court’s concerns, the ED was instructed to investigate whether the counsel’s conduct aligned with the agency’s protocols, underscoring the necessity of preserving the court’s dignity.

The ED committed to implementing a specialized training program aimed at sensitizing its legal representatives to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Additionally, the ED counsel requested an adjournment after one of the defendants, Anjaneya Hanumanthaiah, filed a motion for the return of confiscated items.

The court highlighted that the agency had previously communicated via email that it had no objections to the application, prompting further inquiries into why this information was not relayed during the proceedings.
